Anxiety disorders are one of the most prevalent mental health conditions globally, characterized by excessive worry, fear, and physical symptoms such as increased heart rate and sweating. These disorders often lead to significant distress and impairment in daily functioning (Olaniyi et al., 2024). Traditional treatments for anxiety disorders typically include pharmacological interventions and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). However, complementary therapies such as music therapy have been shown to offer additional benefits in managing anxiety symptoms (Bello & Adamu, 2023).
Music therapy is a non-invasive therapeutic technique that uses music interventions to improve mental health outcomes. Studies have demonstrated that music therapy helps reduce anxiety, stress, and agitation by promoting relaxation, improving mood, and enhancing emotional expression (Oluwaseun & Idris, 2024). The Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Akure, Ondo State, provides psychiatric services to individuals with a variety of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders. Although music therapy is increasingly recognized as an effective tool in mental health treatment, its application in managing anxiety disorders in Nigerian psychiatric hospitals remains underexplored.
This study seeks to examine the impact of music therapy on anxiety levels in patients at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Akure. By assessing the effectiveness of music therapy, the study aims to contribute to the growing body of research on alternative therapeutic interventions in mental health care.
Anxiety disorders are widespread, and conventional treatments are not always sufficient for all patients. In Nigeria, the high prevalence of anxiety disorders coupled with limited access to mental health professionals highlights the need for alternative treatments like music therapy (Olalekan & Adebayo, 2024). At the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Akure, many patients with anxiety disorders struggle to manage their symptoms despite receiving traditional treatments.
Music therapy presents an opportunity to enhance anxiety management, offering a holistic approach to reducing distress. However, its potential remains underutilized in Nigerian psychiatric settings. This study aims to explore how music therapy can support traditional treatment methods, offering insights into its effectiveness for patients with anxiety disorders at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Akure.
This study focuses on patients with anxiety disorders at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Akure, examining the effects of music therapy as an adjunct to traditional treatments. Limitations include variability in patients' responses to music therapy and potential cultural biases regarding non-traditional treatments.
